Maritime patrol operations are some of the lengthiest missions carried out by the world's air arms. Many of the aircraft used were not purpose built but are conversions of airliners or transports. The arrival forty years ago of the Hawker Siddley Nimrod set a new standard in capability and crew comfort over the Neptunes, Shackletons and Warning Stars of an earlier era.
