Ground attack aircraft are generally either purpose designed types like the Vought A-7
Corsair and the Hawker Siddley Harrier or fighters given additional equipment to allow
them to carry bombs or missiles for use against ground targets. Many trainers also come
into this catergory as air arms seek to maximise the use and capability of aircraft in
their inventory. The MB.339 is a perfect example of this philosophy. A large number of
"mud-movers" are also equiped to carry cameras and other intelligence gathering
packages. The SEPECAT Jaguar is a good example. The ground attack aircraft has come a long
way from the original idea of a fighter-bomber.
